Meetup Alternatives in 2026: What to Use When Events Aren't Enough

Meetup deserves respect: it proved strangers would gather around shared interests, two decades before "loneliness epidemic" was a headline. But if you've bounced off it (paid organizer fees, ghost groups, 40-person events where you talked to no one), you're not alone. Here's what to use instead, by what you're actually trying to do.

If you want a committed hobby community

Special-purpose beats general-purpose. Runners end up on Strava clubs and local run crews' Instagrams; climbers on gym Discords; language learners on Tandem. The pattern: the more specific the activity, the healthier the community, because the activity itself does the filtering that Meetup's categories only gesture at.

If you want structured social events

Eventbrite covers the ticketed end. Newer curated-dinner formats (Timeleft and its cousins) fix Meetup's "40 people, no conversation" problem by hard-capping groups at dinner size and charging enough that people show up. They work (at $20–40 a seat, they should) but they're occasions, not a social life.

If you want spontaneity

This is the gap nothing legacy fills. Meetup events are scheduled weeks out by an organizer class; real social life is "beach in an hour, who's in?" That spontaneous, small, local layer is what Zerca is built for: anyone can drop a plan, plans are posters in a deck you flip through, beacons on a live map, joinable in one tap. No organizer fees, no event pages with cover images from 2019, just what's happening near you, now through this weekend.

The structural difference

Meetup's unit is the group: join it, wait for its calendar. Zerca's unit is the plan: see it, join it, meet the people. The group model asks for commitment before the first hello; the plan model gets the hello over with and lets commitment grow from repetition, which is how friendship actually forms.

We're rolling out Puerto Rico first, then San Francisco. If a plan-first city sounds like yours, join the waitlist.
