Safety by Design: How Zerca Makes Meeting Strangers Less Strange

An app that helps strangers meet in person owes its users more than a "be careful out there" disclaimer. Safety at Zerca isn't a settings page, it's load-bearing architecture. Here's what's actually built in.

Public places, small groups: by default, not by suggestion

Every Zerca plan happens somewhere public: a park, a beach, a café, a court, a venue. And groups stay small by design. Both choices are safety features wearing product clothing: public spaces have witnesses and exits; small groups mean you're never anonymous in a crowd.

Location privacy until you're in

For approval-required plans, the map deliberately fuzzes the location: you see the neighborhood, not the doorstep. Exact coordinates and meeting notes unlock only when the host approves you. Hosts decide who gets proximity.

Check-ins that can't be faked from your couch

Zerca's QR check-in verifies two things at once: the code itself (rotating, short-lived, so screenshots don't work) and your physical distance from the plan: check-ins are rejected unless you're actually near the location. Reputation with consequences

Show up: your reliability score grows. Flake, cancel late, get reported: it shows. Badges are visible on profiles, hosts can require minimum trust levels, and repeat bad actors face throttles and suspensions. Trust compounds; so does its absence.

Moderation before content ships

Every uploaded photo is scanned automatically before it's shown, and plan text passes through a moderation pipeline tuned for both English and Spanish, catching spam, solicitation, and abuse patterns before they reach the deck. Chat has slur filtering with obfuscation detection. None of this requires anyone to report anything first.

And when something does go wrong
